Megabonk Redux
A downloadable game for Windows
Hey all, would love for you to try out my game heavily inspired by Megabonk. My focus on this game was to make each playable character feel distinct from each other and require a completely different playstyle. If you like killing large swarms of enemies and picking upgrades to flesh out a build, you'll love this game.
How To Play:
WASD to move
Space to jump
E (Hold) to bring up the upgrade screen
E (Press) near the crystal to advance levels when objective is complete
Mouse to choose upgrades
What went right:
Luckily, on this project, more things felt like they went right than wrong. My vision to create distinct characters with their own playstyles and upgrades was fulfilled and is ready to be expanded on. Additionally, I was able to take a bit of inspiration from some of the other games that I like in the genre and implement them as well, such as the falling meteors which were inspired by Soulstone Survivors. Lastly, I was proud of the amount of interconnected systems I made that are able to be expanded upon dynamically; namely the randomized levels, objectives, difficulty level scaling, and player options and upgrades. Overall, just a joy to work on.
What went wrong:
There were a few core things that I wish I had considered a bit more. One of those things is additional side objectives for the player to do while in the levels. This is a missed opportunity because after a while of kiting enemies and wiping out swathes at the same time, the game loop starts to feel melancholic and needs a bit more depth. This could absolutely be achieved by just adding a couple more things to focus on or even new scenarios that happen as the timer counts down. Another thing I wish I had done a bit more of was player feedback in the way of showing enemy damage and player rewards. Sometimes it's a bit hard to tell when the player has received level points to use and also when the enemies are taking damage and how much you are actually doing. Lastly, I would've liked to add different rarities and values to the upgrades provided to allow for more excitement and meaningful choice for when the player is leveling up. Luckily, these are all thing I intend to add in the future as I am not done with this game yet!
